Landscape lighting and designLandscape lighting for a big yard

(The following is a dramatization.)

The Morrisons were interested in landscape lighting for their Charlotte area home, and they had a lot to work with. The house had a massive front yard. The backyard was L-shaped, with a deck in back of the house, a pool just behind the deck and a gazebo in the more distant part with a rose arbor in front.

The Morrison house had a lot of landscape, but there was a limit to how much the Morrisons were willing to spend on landscape lighting. Fortunately, they were able to find landscape lighting experts in Fort Mill, SC who could help them develop a plan.

Electricians setting priorities

As with any house, the first things that needed to be lit were the front door and the path to it from the driveway. The front door light had to be much brighter — the path lights just needed to show where the path was and if it was clear.

The outdoor deck and pool also needed to be lit enough to be usable for parties at night. The electricians explained that this didn’t meant big lights, but directed light that wasted as little illumination as possible by sending it into the sky.

Then there was the gazebo and rose arbor. The gazebo was screened against mosquitoes and might sometimes be used at night. Like the deck, it needed to be lit well enough to be useful until it was time to retire for the night.

The rose arbor, as a part of the path to the gazebo, just needed to be lit enough to let everyone know it was there in the dark. The answer there was path lighting. A series of small lights, set in pairs on either side of the path and arranged so their light fell directly on the walkway, marked the path from the deck to the gazebo. These lights had a warm, yellow light. A couple of stronger, white lights with good color rendering shone up at the rose arbor, revealing the color of the roses when they were in bloom. All this meant waterproof power cables and a way to turn the lights on and off from inside — the sort of thing landscape lighting professionals are needed for.
