Electrical service for your home or business
When it comes to electrical service, do-it-yourself is something you do to yourself, not for yourself. Many electricians can tell you how often they have to perform electrical service in order to repair the attempt by the homeowner to perform electrical service. These are often seemingly simple repairs such as the installation of a light switch, a wall light or a light fixture, which someone performed after watching a YouTube video on the subject and deciding that was all they needed to know. Using the wrong kind of wire or fitting can damage the light fixture or even start an electrical fire.
Even if the electrical work never fails, when the time comes to sell your house, if an inspector finds it substandard and not up to code (which professional electricians know and you do not) it will lower the value of your home. Trying to do the work yourself will also void your warranties if those are still in effect.
It is particularly important to get professional electrical service when working with high voltage. An electrician who knows how to do electrical service has a good sense of how much electricity a given wire, cord, outlet or appliance can handle, and will also know how much is going to be flowing through it.
You can perform your own tests
There are certain things you can do for yourself with little risk of harm, provided you have the right equipment. With a digital multimeter, you can test the voltage of your electrical outlets. Set the multimeter to measure the alternating current. Then insert the red lead in the volts connector and the black lead in the com connector. Finally, insert the other end of the black lead into the left vertical slot and the other end of the red lead into the right one. At this point, your outlet should read at between 110 and 120.
You can also check your outlets, as well as your electrical cords, by using a voltage tester. First, you are going to want to test the tester itself on an outlet that you already know is in good working order.
